I'm a geologist and I've been enjoying photography for more than 30 years. I do mostly landscape photography but also some wildlife, macro and travel photography when I have the opportunity. The Image above is of the Aurora Borealis taken northeast of Fairbanks Alaska in the Chena River State Recreation Area in January, 2026. Below center you can see the Pleadies (Seven Sisters) star cluster and the "V" in the head of the constellation Taurus the Bull. The bright star at the lower left (between "and Sky") is Jupiter.
Hawaii Lava Fountain, Halema'uma'u Crater
Lava Fountains started occurring in December 2024 at the Halema'uma'u crater inside the Kilauea Caldera at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. Fountain episodes have been occurring about every two weeks since that time. I visited Hawaii in mid-January (2026) to see the episode 40 eruption. During this episode fountaining occurred only from the north vent with a maximum height of about 250m/820ft. During some episodes both vents have been active with fountians sometimes exceeding ~300m/1000ft in height.

I observed and photographed the lava fountain from the Keanakako'i Overlook about a mile hike down the Old Crater Rim Drive Trail. This view point was about one mile from the fountain but provided the best view in the park.

As the lava jetted up into the air it quickly cooled around the edges and top of the fountain to form black tephra (small particles of solidified lava) and Pele's Hair (thin filaments of solidified lava) while most of the lava crashed to the ground to form lava flows which eventually solidified.

The width and height of the lava fountain varied throughout the day. Even from a mile away you could hear the constant roar of the fountain.

Here the fountain and heat entrain the fumes from the south vent and draw them up into the sky. Notice the lava splashing on the ground around the fountain and the cooling lava as it flows away.

The heat and fumes from the lava fountain created clouds above the crater throughout the day. We were lucky to have a wonderful sunset along with the lava fountain and lava fountain generated clouds as the day ended.

Shortly after sunset the fountain ended. But the still hot lava lit up the overlying clouds in a deep red glow ... Pele's After Glow !
Pre-Fountain Lava Flows at the Halema'uma'u Crater
A couple of days before the Episode 40 Lava Fountain started there were intermittent flows of lava from the north and south vents. These night time images are pretty dramatic.

The North Vent is on the right in these photos and South Vent is on the left. At night the bubbling and splashing lava glowed brightly against the dark background. The south vent intermittently bubbled up and lava overflowed as you can see here.

Another image of lava flow activity at the two vents after dark. The south vent produced significantly more lava in the days leading up to the fountain starting. It was the north vent where the lava fountain occurred during Episode 40.

The glow at the two vents is visible in this wide-angle shot taken just after sunset. The heat and fumes from the vents impacts local weather helping to build clouds over the crater.
Aurora Borealis, near Fairbanks, AK
I traveled to Fairbanks this January (2026) during the new moon to get some photos of the aurora. The University of Alaska/Fairbanks Aurora forecast was good for the week I was there with Kp3 to Kp5 episodes predicted. I had three good nights/mornings of aurora activity while I was there.

I setup at the Compaeu Trail Head in the Chena River State Recreation Area (about 30mi from Fairbanks) with my Gitzo tripod and Canon R5 camera with 15-35mm lens. Most images were taken at 15mm, the sky is BIG !

During a few periods of high aurora activity it was very bright, lighting up the area almost like a full moon on the snow covered ground. The bright "star" on the upper left is Jupiter.

The aurora activity was very dynamic changing from minute to minute across the sky. This kept me busy moving the tripod and re-orienting the camera.

The local radio weather forecaster noted that the weather was unusually warm for this time of year (January) with lows around zero and highs in the teens to near 30F (-1C) one afternoon.

There was a pretty significant CME (coronal mass ejection) from a sunspot just before I arrived in Fairbanks and this resulted in some strong aurora activity while I was there. Sometimes you get lucky !

Typically the aurora are a pale yellow-green to a bright green to the un-aided eye. The camera lens gathers a lot more light than your eye allowing us to capture more detail, color and brightness with the camera.

The evergreen trees around the trail head provided a nice foreground to anchor the images of the aurora.

This is a gallery of sunsets and clouds from across the country. Ranging from the Grand Canyon to the Rocky Mountains to the Blue Ridge Parkway. There also are many images from central Kansas where I lived for about 30 years.

Blue Ridge Parkway & Smoky Mountains
We went to the Carolinas in October (2025) to visit family and friends and took some time on the way out and coming back to visit the Great Smoky Mountains and drive along the Parkway to enjoy the fall colors and weather.

The fall colors move down the mountains to lower elevations as the weather cools and it gets later in the season. We got nice color at some locations depending on elevation and timing.

Linville Falls are just off of the Parkway near Linville, NC. There are two segments of the smaller upper falls. This is the eastern branch of the upper falls. The lower falls are larger and more dramatic.

One evening we set up at Cowee Mountain Overlook on the Parkway to enjoy the sunset. The clouds dissipated as the sun got low but we were awarded with a beautiful orange sky as the sun dipped below the purple ridges. I used a 70-200mm lens and 3-stop graduated ND filter to capture these images.

The Oconaluftee stream flows out of the eastern side of the Great Smoky Mtns Ntl Park. Autumn leaves decorated the moss covered stones at a few locations along the stream.

Autumn abstract ...
Reflections of the autumn leaves and spruce pines in the pool below the Upper Linville Falls created ever changing autumn abstracts in the waves on the pool.

Elk have been re-introduced in the Smokies. In the mornings and evenings the elk often come out to feed in grassy medians and meadows along the roads. This can lead to elk traffic jams. I used a 70-200mm lens to capture a few images of the elk.
Yavapai Sunset
We spent several days camped on the south rim of the Grand Canyon in late June/early July of 2025. We went to the edge of the canyon almost every evening and this was the best sunset of our visit.

Afternoon rain showers began to dissipate as the sun got low and some of the low clouds moved across the canyon just as the sun began to set.

Late one afternoon in early July (2025) the monsoon rainstorms moved in across the Grand Canyon, winds were gusting 40 to 50 mph and I had to cover the camera lens repeatedly to keep the rain drops off.

South Rim, Grand Canyon

This is a selection of photos taken from several locations along the south rim of the Grand Canyon in late June and early July, 2025.
Petrified Forest
During the Triassic Period (about 225 million years ago) what is now the Arizona desert was a lush forest with huge trees and early dinosaurs.

Some of these ancient conifer trees were up to 180ft tall and several feet in diameter. When these trees fell and were buried in sediment the wood was replace by silica which became the agate logs we see today.

The landscapes here are pretty bizarre with the large petrified logs often surrounded by the scattered broken pieces of agate on the desert soils
Painted Desert
The Painted Desert cuts across part of the Petrified Forest National Park. These formations are also Triassic Age (about 200 to 225 million years old)

These photos were taken during a large boat tour to the Northwestern Glacier which included going by the Chiswell Islands.

One of the highlights of the boat tour was the opportunity to observe glaciers claving into the fjord. Most of the glaciers are now near the edge of the water after years of retreating.

We observed humpback whales near the Chiswell Islands. When the sun catches the mist from the whale's blowholes just right you get some rainbow effect.

We were lucky to see a small group (pod ?) of Killer Whales out near the Chiswell Islands. This long vertical fin indicates this is a male.

These photos were taken during a different small boat tour to the Northwestern Glacier which also included going by the Chiswell Islands. There were only 5 guests and the captain on this very maneuverable boat.

During the small boat tour we observed a group of humpback whales "bubble feeding" several times. The whales dive deep below a school of small fish and emit air from their blow holes to drive the fish upward and confuse them. The whales pursue them toward the surface, opening their huge mouths to engulf large numbers of the fish. Seagulls follow the whales as they also eat the small fish driven to the surface.

Near the entrance to the Northwestern Fjord we observed a whale repeatedly thrashing the water with its tail. This was much different behavior than the typical whale-tail breaking the water before a dive.

There were many birds nesting along the Chiswell Islands. This photo is of a Tufted Puffin. There are also Horned Puffins in this area. Seals, Sea Lions and Sea Otters also raise their young in the Kenai Fjords.
Katmai National Park & Preserve
I joined a small group for a 4-day/3-night adventure in the Katmai Preserve. We took a float plane in and camped in tents near Morraine Creek. We hiked each day to observe the bears catching salmon in the creek.

The flight from Anchorage to Port Alsworth on Lake Clark went through some scenic mountains with glaciers

The park rangers will tell you that Katmai is home to the largest concentration of brown bears (grizzlies) in the world. This is a photo of a sow with 2 mature cubs.

Competition for salmon is pretty intense along the streams. This sometimes leads to very physical battles between the bears. These can be dramatic, and not always pretty.

I took a day trip from Anchorage to Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park. There were not a lot of bears on the Falls in early August but there were a lot of salmon.

The viewing platforms at the falls are pretty busy and visitors were allotted a 30 min. slot on the main platform. You had to sign up to request additional time slots

The number of salmon in the river and on the falls was incredible. It's obvious why the bears congregate here during spawning season. The bears must eat to put on fat to raise their cubs and survive the winter hibernation, the salmon must spawn to survive. Truly primal forces of nature.

I used a Canon 200-400 mm lens to photograph the bears. It has a built in 1.4X tele extender to yield a 560mm focal length.
Antelope Canyon, June 2025
These are photos taken during a group hike through upper Antelope Canyon. This is on Navajo Indian Reservation land and is only accessible via guided tours.

There is an extra cost for taking the tour when the sun is over head but this time allows you to see sun beams shining down into the canyon.

The walls of the canyon have been carved by flowing water over time and the walls of sandstone are curved and fluted. Winds at the surface were blowing sand down into the canyon making "sand falls" into the canyon.

Cell phones are a great way to capture photos and videos of the canyon. I used my Canon EOS 5D with a 24-105mm lens to capture these photos.
Water Hole Canyon, June 2025
This canyon is south of Page, AZ and we were able to get a small group photography tour where we could use our tripods.

This canyon varied from wide and open to narrow slots where we had to squeeze between walls and climb down ladders.

The light varied as we hiked down the canyon and the sun got higher in the sky. It also varied as the canyon opened or narrowed.

The layering, cross bedding and texture of the sandstone add to the feel of the images. You have to consider all the time required to deposit the sand and for it to lithify into sandstone, then the water to erode and form the canyons ... geologic time ...

The contrast of the lake water against the barren crossbedded sandstone is stark and unique

The Glen Canyon Dam holds back the water of the Colorado river flooding much of the Glen Canyon located in the high desert regions of northern Arizona and southern Utah.

We rented a small pontoon boat at the Antelope Point Marina and spent the day cruising around Navajo Canyon, Padre Bay and Last Chance Bay. This is just part of the lower lake area.

We took a 6-day/5-night small boat tour around Glacier Bay National Park. We spent our days either kayaking near some of the glaciers or taking hikes along the shore line to learn about the local environment.

These images were taken in Anderson County, South Carolina. The camera/lens was placed behind each leaf to capture sunlight passing through the leaves.

I used an EOS R5 camera and either a 24-105mm lens or a 100mm Macro lens to capture these images. For several of the images I added a 25mm extensoin tube to the macro lens.

The intricate detail of the leaves is illuminated nicely by the sunlight passing through the leaves. In some cases imperfections (disease spots ?) on the leaves resulted in intricate color patterns.

No color enhancement or intensification was used on any of these images. The sunlight passing through the leaves reveals the true colors present and the detailed leaf structure.

The City of Salina, Kansas provides a nice Fireworks display for the community every year. I set up east of the display area this year and captured a few good images of the event.

Tibet Fall 2015: Places & Faces
I was in Shanghai for a conference and to teach a seminar in October of 2015. Planning ahead I was able to get a permit to go to Tibet after my work was completed. The first few days of the 10 day bus tour were in Lhasa where we visited the Potala Palace and other monasteries.

Our tour group in front of the Potala Palace in Lhasa. The Potala was the religious and political center of Tibet and home of the Dali Lama before China moved in during the 1950s.
Deprung Monastery
Deprung Monastery was founded in the early 1400s and was the home of the first 5 Dali Lamas. Turning the prayer wheels are an integral part of the religious rituals at each monastery.
Sera Monastery
Sera Monastery was also founded in the early 1400s and is the second largest Gelugpa monastery in Tibet. It is famous for the debates monks conduct in the courtyard each day which is a part of their training and education.

The first day I was in Lhasa I went for a walk through the streets to see what local life was like. A couple of days later I joined the pilgrims walking the Barkhor circuit around the Jokhang temple.

It was late afternoon-early evening when I walked through the streets near my motel. Street merchants were busy, shoppers were buying produce, kids were heading home from school, and a few monks were about.

Pilgrims from across Tibet come to visit the Jokhang temple, the most revered religious temple in Tibet, and walk the Barkhor circuit on the streets around the temple. Some pilgrims will walk the circuit for hours and do prostrations at the Jokhang.

After a few days in Lhasa we took the Southern Friendship Highway to Shigatse and points beyond. These are a few of the views along the highway.

After a few days in Lhasa we took the bus across country to Shigatse and other villages along the way. We made it to the village of Tingri but snow on the Lamna-La pass (5100m / 16,700ft) prevented us from getting to the Rongphu monastery with views of the north face of Mt Everest. We went through several checkpoints along the way manned by Chinese military.

At the entrance these ladies were selling incense and other things to use as offerings in the monastery.

After our lunch stop in one town we walked down to the city square where they were putting on an autumn festival dance. This was definitely one of the highlights of the trip.
Tingri Mountain Views
We made it over the Gyatso-La pass (5248m / 17,200ft) to the village of Tingri. Unfortunately the snow moved in that evening and we got stranded there and could not proceed to the Rongphu monastery. We had to wait most of the next day for the Gyatso-La pass behind us to be cleared so we could head back to Lhasa. Everyone was bummed. These are photos of the snowy mountains around Tingri and the road back over the pass.

Just as the sun begins to emerge from behind the moon the Diamond Ring Effect typically occurs. Also in this image you can see two large solar prominences.

Sun spots
I used a 500mm lens with 1.4X tele extender for effective 700mm to capture images of the eclipse. A yellow filter was used. Several sun spots are visible in this image as the moon begins to occult the sun.

At full occultation the filter is removed from the lens to capture images of the suns corona.
Baily's Beads
Just before the sun is fully occulted by the moon "Baily's Beads" may occur. This is where sunlight shines through valleys in mountains on the moon.

Lukla to Namche
Treks into the Khumbu valley start in Lukla and head to Namche Bazaar. You cross several suspension bridges like this one along the trail.
Namche to Kumjung
The hike up the mountain from Namche Bazaar to the village of Kumjung provides several nice views of Namche Bazaar and the surrounding mountains.
Kumjung to Dole
The trail above Kumjung begins to provide some nice views of the Himalayan mountains and streams along the trail side.

This view of Arakam Peak is visible from the second Gokyo Lake on the way to the village of Gokyo.

We left before sunrise to hike up Gokyo Ri, a mountain next to the village of Gokyo. Elevation at top of Gokyo Ri is about 17,600ft. The village of Gokyo is visible next to the 3rd Gokyo lake in this image. Arakam peak is just left of center with the Ngozumpa glacier crossing the middle of the image. Mt Everest is visible from here.

We hiked across the rock covered Ngozumpa glacier to the village of Thagnak. You can see the trail up Gokyo Ri (brown mtn) in the background, center of this image. We heard pops and cracks of the glacier moving as we hiked.

We hiked over Cho La Pass (about 17,500 ft) and then by Arakam Peak, Chola lake and Chola glacier (shown in this image) on the way to the village of Dzongla.

After leaving the village of Dzongla we joined the main trail to Everest Base Camp and the amount of foot traffic increased significantly. Mt Pumori (about 23,500 ft) is visible on the left in this image.

Gorak Shep is the last village on the trail to Everest Base Camp (EBC). This photo was taken along the trail near EBC. The rock covered Khumbu glacier is to the right of the trail here. The top of Mt Everest is visible in the center-right background. The NW Col and Chang Tse peak is visible left of center.

We started hiking up Kala Patthar (next to Gorak Shep) before sunrise. This is a view of Mt Everest (rt of ctr) and Chang Tse (lft) over the NW Col before the sun rises. The Khumbu glacier and icefall are visible. Elevation at the top of KP is about 18,500 ft.
LaBouche to PangBoche
Just after passing the monuments for those whom died on Mt Everest we had this view of a storm over Lhotse and the Lhotse ridge, Mt Everest is hidden in the clouds.
Ama Dablam BC
From Pangboche we hiked up to the Ama Dablam base camp. Elevation at base camp is approx. 15,000 ft and the peak of Ama Dablam is over 22,000 ft.

Western Tanagers
These colorful male Tanagers were coming to visit a feeder I set up at our campsite just outside of Buena Vista, CO. The females have a more subdued greenish-yellow body color. I used a 500mm lens with 1.4X tele extender for effective 700mm to capture images of the birds.

This is a male Evening Gros Beak. Several males and females came to visit the bird feeder each day. Notice the greenish color of the beak, that occurs during breeding season on both males and females.

This is a male Black Headed Gros Beak. Both males and females came to visit the feeder each day. The females are lighter colored with a big white eye-stripe over each eye.

Tiny Cactus Blooms
We found these tiny cactus blooms near the Aignes Vailles Falls trail head. One bloom is about the size of a finger nail.

Photos of some Aspen trunks were taken up near the old mining ghost town of St. Elmo, CO
Calypso Orchid
I found a few of these small orchids near Denny Creek. Denny Creek trail leads up to Mt Yale. The entire plant was about 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) tall.

High stream flows during the spring along Denny Creek made for some nice photos of water cascading over the large boulders. Getting these images required getting off the trail.

I used a tripod and 24-105mm lens for most of the images along Denny Creek. Exposure times were usually less than 1 second. A remote release is good to use for these slow exposures.

In some places the stream overflowed its banks and washed across cobbles and downed tree trunks along the steep mountainside

Aignes Vailles Falls
A modest stream washes down a rugged cliff face on the south side of Mt Princeton. I used 16-35mm and 24-105mm lenses to capture several images of the falls.
Scruffy BH Sheep
A small herd of Big Horn sheep were grazing off the gravel road in Brown's Canyon. They were still losing their winter coats, giving them a scruffy look. I used a Canon 200-400mm F4 lens to capture these images.
Scrub Jays
These noisy quick moving birds would swoop in to gather seed below the feeder and fly away as quickly as they arrived. I used a 500mm lens with a 1.4X tele extender for effective 700mm to capture these images.
Musk Ox
These photos of Musk Oxen were taken near Nome, AK in late March/early April of 2023

We snowmobiled out each morning to track down herds of Musk Ox. It was typically around zero F in the morning and warmed up into the teens in the afternoon

The adult animals would form a ring around the younger calves as you got close to the herd on foot. After they got used to your presence you could get a few photos of the cute claves

As I slowly approached one of the smaller herds on foot they spooked and charged off over the hill making for some nice action photos. I used a Canon 200-400/560 and 70-200mm lenses for the Musk Ox photos
Aurora - Stampede Road
These images were taken north of Hinkley, AK near the end of Stampede Rd

I was staying in Hinkley, AK in late March and headed out after midnight along Stampede Rd. This is about 15 miles north of Denali Ntl. Park. There were some high thin clouds illuminated by a crescent moon getting low in the west

The images in this gallery were taken over a period of about 10 to 12 minutes. The intensity of the aurora increased and then began to fade.

These images were taken with a Canon 16-35mm zoom lens set at 16mm, f2.8 to 3.5 and ISO of 1600 or 3200, exposure times ranged from about 3 to 7 seconds

The intensity and color of the aurora changed significantly while I was shooting. Constellations like the Big Dipper (upper left here), Little Dipper, Cassiopea, and Leo the Lion (below center here) are visible in many images.
